Health and nurturing treatments have been the focus of Queen Dorothea's Spa since July 1, 2008. The spa offers guests the opportunity to pamper their bodies, continuing a long spa tradition started thousands of years ago by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Spas had their heyday in the mid-1800s across Europe, where the health apostles of the time emphasized the four elements of water, air, fire and earth.
Spa stays were already a reality in Kolding in the early 1900s. However, these were not recreational baths, but rather medical treatments to cure children suffering from tuberculosis.
The Christmas Seal Sanatorium by Kolding Fjord was ready to receive 120 sick children in 1911. The fresh sea air, light, water, a strong and nutritious diet, along with exercise and rest were the core elements of tuberculosis treatment.
Postmaster Einar Hollbøll came up with the idea to create a Christmas stamp, with the proceeds going towards building the first sanatorium for children suffering from tuberculosis in Denmark. Tuberculosis was considered the most dangerous disease in the early 1900s, killing up to 6,000 people annually.
